Recovery Pathways Study

Do you have an alcohol problem?
Have you recently started to address it?
Are you planning to address it?

What are we studying?
We are conducting a research study to obtain greater knowledge about the pathways followed in new recovery attempts for individuals with alcohol problems.

Why is it important?
Alcohol use disorders (AUD) are often chronic conditions that require ongoing monitoring and management over the long-term to increase the chances of stable remission. Given the diverse range of addiction experiences, recovery preferences and pathways to recovery, more empirically-supported options are likely to engage and help a greater variety of individuals seeking recovery.

What is this study accomplishing?
This study has the potential to contribute valuable information about recovery pathways for individuals with alcohol use disorder and may provide additional support for mutual-help organizations.

Who can participate?
Individuals who have made a new recovery attempt in the past 90 days OR who plan to make a new recovery attempt in the next 14 days. Individuals must also be over the age of 18 and be willing to travel to Boston for study visits.

What will I be asked to do?
If you choose to enroll, you will be required to come to our downtown Boston office at the MGH Recovery Research Institute to complete your assessments. During each assessment, you will complete online surveys and computerized tasks with a research coordinator. Estimated time commitment: 7 visits over 2 years.

Will I be compensated for participating?
Participants will be compensated up to $455. That is $45, $55, $60, $65, $70, $75, and $85 for the seven visits, starting with $45 for the first visit and increasing throughout the study period to $85 for the final visit.

How do I get started?
